Sana'a (dpa) - Lightning and flash floods caused by torrential rains have killed eight people in Yemen in the past two days, police officials said Friday.

Five people, including two women, were killed by lightning strikes in three incidents in the northern Saada province and the central province of Raima on Wednesday, they said.

On Thursday, flash floods in the southern province of Taiz swept away farming areas, killing three people. Eight people were injured when floods hit a marketplace in the southeastern Mukalla city.

In the western province of Mahweet, floods submerged farming lands and highways, causing landslides.

Flash floods and lightning are common in this impoverished Arab country, where dozens of people are killed every year in incidents caused by rains during spring and summer.

Last month, 16 people were killed in lightning strikes in three mountainous provinces in northwestern Yemen. dpa kal sc
